Saving Lives, Reducing Harm
Patient safety is the critical concern for everyone involved in providing healthcare, with wide range of issues that can impact the quality of care and patient outcomes. It is recognised that addressing these issues requires a comprehensive approach that covers improving healthcare systems, fostering a culture of safety across all organisations, and ultimately engaging all stakeholders from healthcare professionals through to patients in these safety initiatives.
When the NHS Patient Safety Strategy was published, it set out how the NHS will support staff and providers in addressing key challenges to enhance patient safety. This ranged from developing robust systems for incident reporting, learning & improving data analysis for safety insights and the implementation of continuous improvement processes. It also empowers patients, carers, and staff with the skills, confidence and mechanisms to improve safety. By tackling these areas, the strategy aims to save lives, reduce harm, and improve the overall quality of care.
With a target to save 1,000 extra lives and £100 million in care costs each year, the FutureNHS platform is at the heart of the NHS Patient Safety Strategy. The programme is already bringing together 8,500 healthcare professionals collaborate together to build a culture of safety, engaging in training and best practice sharing, getting updates on the strategy first hand. This also includes exploiting new forms of media such as providing access to podcasts and case studies on the platform, helping to drive engagement with the strategy and having a direct impact on Patient Safety within the NHS.
The importance of the NHS Patient Safety Strategy cannot be overstated. By prioritizing patient safety, the strategy not only saves lives and reduces harm but also fosters a culture of continuous improvement and accountability. It ensures that healthcare professionals are equipped with the necessary tools and knowledge to provide the highest quality of care. The collaborative efforts facilitated by the FutureNHS platform amplify the strategy’s impact, driving innovation and best practices across the NHS. Ultimately, this comprehensive approach to patient safety is crucial for building a resilient healthcare system that consistently delivers safe, effective, and compassionate care to all patients.
