Safeguarding is everyone’s business: how a critical national capability was created.

The FutureNHS Safeguarding Programme is a built on the vital online community that was designed to amplify the voice of lived experience, local practitioners and carers and so develop learning to fight neglect, harm, abuse and violence. This programme is built around the secure Kahootz environment where members connect, share knowledge, and work together on safeguarding initiatives.

Why the NHS Safeguarding programme started using FutureNHS?

The NHS Safeguarding programme was growing, with a wide range of initiatives and many of the people involved in safeguarding dispersed across the UK. As with many such initiatives, this introduced the risk of silos forming, preventing knowledge built up in one region being exploited for the better of vulnerable people in another.

FutureNHS was asked to support the creation of an information and data sharing programme that could be easily accessible to critical stakeholders both within, and outside of the health system.

Fast forward 7 years later, the programme is now driving critical improvements to patient outcomes. Bringing together national policy heads, regional and local safeguarding leads in the NHS with the Department of Health, local government, police, health and justice subject matter experts. This critical capability, now deployed nationwide, is integral to driving better outcomes through:

• Allowing system leaders to connect with everyone in safeguarding, quickly and get instant feedback
• Enabling members to safely share ideas and learnings with each other
• Draw in expertise from with wider partners such as the police, Department of Health and Ministry of Justice
• Empowering members to inform critical national policy to protect societies most vulnerable people

How does it work?

• Built on the secure FutureNHS platform, a capability developed in collaboration with British software leader Kahootz
• Deploying a range of communication forums, communities and steering groups with varying levels of data sensitivities to provide a secure but inclusive area
• Empowered programme leads are able to draw in subject matter experts from across the government, private and third sectors
• Regular blogs from the senior stakeholders including the national lead to drive the importance of improving services to vulnerable people.
