Ability Level Class Size

Mixed abilities, but most children have good Kahootz skills.

This project was run with all grade 6 classes, 26-28 children in each class.

Computer Access Duration

Children have access to 4 computers in their classroom and the ICT centre which has 60 computers once a week for 50 minutes.

Teachers also are able to book in an extra session for their class. Children worked on their own Xpression.

This project was developed in two parts.

In November-December 2005-children from grades 3-5 created Xpressions about our school and the Commonwealth Games. This was due to it being the end of the year.

Children were asked if they would like to be in a special Kahootz group. These children came over to the lab for 4 sessions to work on their Xpressions. They then uploaded them to the Kahootz website.

In Term 1 2006, Grade 6 children created Xpressions about the Commonwealth Games. This was their ICT task for the term.

Rationale

This project started last October when our school was approached by ACTF to begin collaboration with an Indian school as part of the Commonwealth Games. The Indian school Kendriya Vidyalaya had never used Kahootz before. The project encourages children from Roxburgh Homestead to communicate with children from India using Kahootz. Each group of children would be able to learn about each other through the Xpressions they made of their school and the Commonwealth Games.

Student Tasks

This project involved the students creating an Xpression about our school or the Commonwealth Games.

Their Xpressions needed to show that they could:
  • Storyboard/plan an Xpression
  • Select an appropriate world
  • Insert objects eg people
  • Resize these objects
  • Swatch the objects and the world
  • Keypoint both objects and world
  • Animate objects
  • Change or create new objects

  • Their Xpressions also had to show our collaborative partners a "story".

    Involvement for Xpression Participant

Children were able to look at Xpressions from the Indian school. They could see what school life might be like there. The children were amazed at the skills shown by the Indian school children who had only been using Kahootz for a short time. They also were able to discuss what school life in India was like compared to here. We also had access to the Indian school website.
They were able to "deconstruct" the Xpressions eg if there was a good feature they could see how it had been created. This was used as a teaching tool and lesson focus for one of the classes.
They were able to download an Xpression and add to it and then upload it again.

    Learning Outcomes for Student Creator

Being able to explore designs and ideas from other cultures.
Development of Kahootz skills. There was a significant improvement in Kahootz skills, problem solving and higher order thinking. Children also worked very well together sharing ideas and teaching each other new skills.
Learning how to upload to the Kahootz Website

Collaborative Potential - some issues and points

    1. It is important when setting up a collaborative project that both teachers need to be fully involved and committed. Communication via email was difficult with this project. There were also no clear guidelines for what we would be doing. The experience however has been a positive one, although next time I would prefer to set up the initial guidelines so that both schools are clear on what the project is about.
    2. The age levels of the children should be similar. The Indian children who had worked on the Xpressions were a lot older than our students. Kamal Peter had emailed to say she was going to try and find a class teacher from a grade 5/6 but this has not occurred.
    3. We would have liked the children to communicate via email as well as through the Kahootz Xpressions, but this was also difficult.
