Project

  PART ONE:
Two weeks (2X 45-60 minute sessions) working through Kahootz tutorials and 'playing'. Students worked in loose pairs, taking turns at mouse control.

PART TWO:
Every day for 7 consecutive days (7 X 45-60 minutes) - a competition deadline loomed. Students worked in pairs on the In Kahootz with Saving Freshwater project.

Rationale

  1. Students are familiar with the likes of PlayStation and X-box, so are immediately comfortable with and excited by Kahootz - even with no pre-experience. Kahootz is fun, engaging, promotes problem solving and is student-centred.
  2. Students learn well through visual stimulus, play and verbalizing.
  3. Students can produce some amazing results when given a clear, simple purpose.
In pairs, the students were challenged to:

Learn all they could about using Kahootz through tutorials and play, then.
Create a 30 second commercial about saving freshwater, guided by the verses of a rap provided for them.
A hybrid Xpression using the best scenes, as voted by the students, was rendered into AVI files and burned onto DVD along with sound files of students rapping the rap.

The DVD was:
Entered into a competition.
Used by the students in student-run, whole-school Watercare Education Program.

Student Tasks

Create an 8 scene Xpression, which runs exactly for 30 seconds.
Each scene must reflect accurately the sense of each verse in a 30 second rap about how water can be better saved at work, rest and play.
  Scene 1:
Introduction: The problem made clear eg. people demonstrating.
  Scene 2:
Wasting water with hoses and showers.
  Scene 3:
The consequence of that action.
  Scene 4:
Misunderstanding that a little rainfall = ample freshwater supplies.
  Scene 5:
The consequences of that action.
  Scene 6:
Wasting water when we play eg water fights, in the pool…
  Scene 7:
The consequences of that action.
  Scene 8:
Conclusion: The solution eg. slogans such as Be Waterwise.

Involvement for Xpression Participant

Select appropriate Kahootz 'World'.
Choose appropriate 'Objects' or create them as needs be.
Use tools, swatches, animations and keypoints to best convey the rap's message.
View each other's Xpressions - one message can be presented successfully, differently.
Determine which students' individual scenes best conveyed the message of each verse.
Create a hybrid Expression composed of "best scenes".
Students record rap for overlay overlaid.
Create DVD of Expression + Rap (not done by students).

Learning Outcomes for Student Creator

Exploring design and presentation concepts - matching visuals with 'lyrics'.
Developing skills in the creation and manipulation of digital art.
Experimenting with various types of animation techniques.
Objects required enlarging or reducing, introducing ideas of multiplication and ratio.
Creating objects.

Collaborative Potential

As part of our Watercare Education Program, the year 6 students ran a 2-week In Kahootz with Saving Freshwater competition for students from year 3 - 7. Entries had to submit online. They were to be one scene conveying clearly a message about better watercare around the home. Some entrants worked on the project during class time with their teachers. All entrants were also invited to book in for lunchtime tutorials run by year 6 students in our school computer lab - every day over 2 weeks. They could book 2 sessions a week.
Show DVD to other classes to educate in water care and inspire in the use of Kahootz.
