This unit of work requires students to research of magazines, internet and newspaper articles and make use of personal experiences to note issues of mobile phone use for young teenagers. Brainstorm and share their findings in small groups and then report to the class as a whole.
Research various mobile phone ownership plans prepaid vs contract and note the benefits and pitfalls of both.
Write up a minimum one page report summarizing and discussing the research results with recommendations for 14-16 year olds considering a mobile phone purchase.
In small groups brainstorm ideas on possible approaches and designs for a digital movie summarizing these findings.
Design the number of scenes and subject matter of each scene.

Learning Outcomes for Student Creator

Increased knowledge of issues relating to mobile phone ownership.
Increased knowledge of overcoming these ownership issues.
Ability to animate theory learnt and to use a different media for educational and assessment purposes.
Experiment with a variety of animation techniques.
Objects required enlarging or reducing, introducing ideas of multiplication and ratio.
Use of swatching to make their scenes more realistic.
Appropriate use of sounds.
Use of text to illustrate concepts or outcomes that animation cannot.

Collaborative Potential

The theory and research can be done in their humanities (economics) classes.
The Xpressions can be shown to other classes and age groups for educational purposes.
Other students may be able to add to the expression or create another expression as a sequel if advice on mobile phone ownership is followed or not followed. Eg What if…. scenarios.
Students could develop written flyers, brochures or guides on:
- Sensible use of mobile phones.
- Tips on the use of mobile phones.
- Pitfalls to avoid.
- Alternatives to mobile phone use etc.
