Rationale

The project asked students to prepare a presentation for the Prime Minister to explain the issues involved in the Greenhouse Effect including links between fossil fuels, generation of electricity and Global Warming.

Student Tasks

Explain with diagrams how the Greenhouse Effect works. Explain why we need a greenhouse effect for life on earth.
What is a fossil fuel? How and when were they made in the first place? What elements are present in fossil fuels?
Explain what happens when you burn fossil fuels? Include a chemical or word equation.
In Australia one of the biggest use of fossil fuels is the burning of coal to generate electricity. In Australia, what percentage of our electric power comes from coal fired power stations? Where does the rest of our electric power come from? Why do we have so many coal fired power stations? Using diagrams show how this works in a power station.
The carbon dioxide produced in burning fossil fuels is sent into the atmosphere. This is a greenhouse gas. Given this also explain why scientists are concerned about our present rate of use of fossil fuels.
Make some recommendations to the Prime Minister about:
- future power generation in Australia
- future World demand for energy
- future demand for coal exports from Australia
