The children were studying underwater habitats and were looking at the problems facing the oceans and our waterways. Oil spills, rubbish, introduced species, over fishing, natural disasters and industrial and household waste were considered.

Student Tasks

The children were set the following task-
Create a scene showing the way your chosen underwater habitat should look. Show a problem your habitat faces and the effects of this problem.

Show the habitat after the effects of the problem have taken hold. Students worked in pairs.

Involvement for Xpression Participant

Create a story board before starting Xpression.
At least 3 scenes needed to be linked.
Children were encouraged to keypoint scenes as well as objects.
As there are a limited number of underwater objects- children had to create fish, coral, seaweed, rocks etc.
Children were challenged to use symbolic representations.
Swatching, resizing, grouping, cloning and timing are important considerations.
Include sounds and links.

Each participant needs to:

Have knowledge of the underwater environment and the problems that environment faces.
Plan and sequence their work to create the required effects. Use their visual thinking skills to create realistic underwater scenes.
Work cooperatively, share ideas and time using the computer.
Use previous Kahootz knowledge and be willing to extend their skills.

Learning Outcomes for Student Creator

Researching information relevant to their environment and issue.
Show an understanding of scale and perspective.
Explain and discuss their Xpression with others.
Create a realistic habitat and show realistic events.
Adapt and modify scenes by changing objects, animation and use of notepad.

Collaborative Potential

Students could share information about various aquatic environments.
Sharing "real" incidents from various parts of Australia.
