Rationale

This unit integrates aspects across the Key Learning Areas of Society and Environment, Science, Maths and Information and Communication Technology.

It involves students researching and comparing the planets of our solar system. The students were required to create an expression that gave facts about the planets and to illustrate their order, relative size and position in the Milky Way Galaxy. The students were required to use the Kahootz tools to create navigation, animation, and objects that represented our Solar System.

The students were also required to save and upload their expressions onto the Kahootz Website.

Student Tasks

The class was provided with an activity outline by the teacher that required them to produce the following by the end of the 3 weeks:

Research and list information on the planets of our Solar system (name, order, size, moons and distance from sun).
Use this information to create an Xpression titled “The Planets”.

The Xpression must include:
1. An Animated Title Scene (text moving in star wars fashion)

2. Solar System Scene where the Sun and nine planets are inserted in order and relative in size to each other.

3. The planets must link to 9 scenes with each one showing a planet and information gathered at the research stage.

4. A final scene (extension) that shows a “new planet” where swatching and objects have been inserted to create a new world.

5. Students must save and compress their Xpression and upload using the Kahootz web site and upload facility.

Involvement for Xpression Participant

To complete the task the student must gather and record information.

Create and name 11 scenes.
Insert worlds and objects from the world and object libraries.
Use the tools option to resize and adjust objects.
Use the Notepad to create text.
Use the animation options to create movement.
Use the link option to create movement between scenes.
Save and compress their Xpression.
Connect to the web and upload their Xpressions.

Each participant needs to:

Plan and sequence their work to create the needed navigation Use their visual thinking skills to correctly represent the planets sizes.

Learning Outcomes for Student Creator

Researching information relevant to their topic of “The Planets”
Creating a realistic solar system
Developing an understanding of how scenes can be adapted changed or modified through the use of objects, animation, resizing and notepad
Students experiment with various types of animation techniques.
Becomes a discussion starter for other students.
Show an understanding of scale, distance and order.

Collaborative Potential

The children had to work in two different groups.
Students could work together to gather and include more information.
Students could create their own Solar system using the same types of scene.
