I have access to 4 computers in my room so 3 groups of 8 nearly covers the whole class

  7 weeks
Rationale

This unit integrates aspects across the Key Learning Areas of Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE) and Technology.

Our class this term has been talking and looking at Australia. We are completing a pamphlet in groups about an aspect of Australia that we are interested in. The introduction of Kahootz has meant that we have worked in pairs to make a world that reflects a typically Australian scene. We have used this topic to teach the various concepts and skills you need to make Kahootz work. I have made a rubric that they are continually updating as their skills increase. When they are finished I intend to upload the worlds onto the site or at least some of them. I thought they would be of interest to many overseas children.

Student Tasks

The class was provided with an activity outline by the teacher that required them to produce the following by the end of the 7 weeks:

Discussion of stereotypical Aussie icons.
Choose a word that is typically “Australian”.
Find objects that are Australian.
Create a “fly through” the scene that would interest a viewer.

The Australian topic has been fantastic to provide a more real purpose for the base of their learning and focus their ideas on an enjoyable task.

Each participant needs to:

Group work – cooperation – sharing ideas.
Peer tutoring – how to share what you know.
Demonstrating understanding of their environment.
Stereotypes, marine/land environments.
Thinking hats were used to establish and reflect on Australia.

Learning Outcomes for Student Creator

Reflection/discussion of stereotypical ‘Oz’ images. How they appear in the media.
Creating an animation.
To interest a non ‘Oz’ viewer.
Introduce and learn the specific skills of Kahootz for further study.
Learn extra key boarding skills.

Collaborative Potential

The children had to work in two different groups:
To make their Xpression (pairs).
To produce a pamphlet for tourists (2 – 4).
Other schools – Is this a realistic/stylized presentation of an Oz environment?
