Rationale

This unit integrates aspects across the Key Learning Areas of Society and Environment, Art, and Mathematics.

It involves students completely transforming a bland urban environment into a colourful, fantastic setting. Once the task is completed, students will deconstruct their peers' Xpressions.

Student Tasks

The class was provided with an activity worksheet that explained that they needed to complete the following:

Choose a bland environment and explain why it is unappealing.
Create a duplicate of the Scene.
Transform the existing textures in the scene through the use of Swatches.
Place objects (e.g. people, animals, trees, etc) into the scene.
Use various forms of animation to give life to the new scene.
Place appropriate sounds on the objects.
Use links to provide the participant with additional information.

Involvement for Xpression Participant

Each participant needs to explore the Scene thoroughly to find out how many things have been changed, introduced or deleted.
Extensive use of the navigation tools required to ensure the investigation of the area is comprehensive.

Learning Outcomes for Student Creator

Understanding the importance of colour and texture in the design process.
Learning how to change the ‘feel’ of a setting through the use of different textures.
Developing an understanding of links that allow the participant to move from the ‘before’ and ‘after’ scenes.
Students experiment with various types of animation techniques.
Greater understanding as to how manipulation of 3D objects can lead to change in perception.

Collaborative Potential

Each scene is to be viewed and explored, with feedback provided on the number of changes.
Students can compare techniques used to transform the scene.
The class could challenge others to come up with variations on this type of interactive content in the Kahootz Message Forums.
