5. INSTALLING AND UNINSTALLING KAHOOTZ:

Subject: 5.1 - I've downloaded an Xpression file from the web site but it will not open. Why?
You will need to have Kahootz installed on your computer to play Kahootz Xpression files.

Subject: 5.2 - How do l find out which version of Kahootz l have on my computer?
On a PC you can see the version information for your copy of Kahootz by choosing "About Kahootz" from the "About" menu. On Macintosh, the same information is available under the Apple menu.

Subject: 5.3 - Can I install Kahootz 2.0 on a network?
Kahootz 2.0 is designed to be run on individual workstations in a computer lab. Although many users have been able to run Kahootz 2.0 successfully network application, The Kahootz team have not tested extensively in this environment, and for this reason we do not officially support network installations.

Subject: 5.4 - How do I uninstall Kahootz 2.0?
On a PC, the Installer will launch automatically as soon as you insert your Kahootz 2.0 CD.

If you wish to unistall Kahootz 2.0:

2: Click on the "Quit" button to exit the installer.
3: Right-click on your CD Drive and open it in Explorer.
4: Double-click on the "Uninstaller" application on the CD.

Subject: 5.5 - I get a message telling me that l have too many fonts on my Windows PC. How do l fix this?
If you receive a message indicating that you have too many fonts installed on your system, you will not be able to proceed with the installation until you have removed sufficient fonts from your machine.

Subject: 5.6 - I get a message telling me that l have too many fonts on my Macintosh running OS X. How do l fix this?
Up until Macintosh OS 9, there was an arbitrary limit to the number of fonts allowed on a Macintosh system drive (you can find a tech note on the issue here: Apple Font Technical article.

Exceeding this number of items could potentially cause serious system errors on Macintosh System 8 and earlier, so Kahootz installer tests the number of fonts in order to ensure compatability with these systems. The test was left in the OSX version of the installer due to an oversight during production -- we apologise.
The error will be corrected in future releases.

In order to install Kahootz on OS 10 after Kahootz Installer has reported too many fonts on the system:

  • Locate the fonts directory in the current user's library settings. Typically, this would be at "Your System Drive: Users: Your User Name: Library: Fonts".
  • Rename this directory to, for example, "temp_Fonts".
  • Create a new Folder in the same directory and name it "Fonts"
  • Run Kahootz 2.0 Installer.
  • After installation is complete you will be able to move the contents of the "temp_Fonts" directory back into your "Fonts" directory.

  • Note, there is another font directory located in your system directory: you do not need to alter this directory.

    6. USING KAHOOTZ 2.0

Subject: 6.1 - Why am I seeing Kahootz 2.0 as a small screen?
In order to allow improved performance on slower computers, Kahootz offers a choice of three display sizes. You can change the current size of the display by using the "View" menu.

Please note that the Kahootz 2.0 interface has been designed for a screen resolution of 800x600: if your monitor is set to another resolution, Kahootz may fail to display properly.

Subject: 6.2 - Why is there a black flash when I move between scenes?
Before Kahootz can display a new scene, it needs to remove all objects and textures in the current scene from the display area. As the display area is cleared it briefly flashes black. On a slow computer, this flash may last for as long as a second.

Subject: 6.3 - Why does Kahootz stay in the background when I open it from Explorer?
On Windows XP and 2000, the Kahootz window may not become active as soon as it is launched from explorer. This is a known issue with these versions of MS Windows, and there is currently no solution for this problem; you will need to select the Kahootz icon in Windows' task bar in order to make Kahootz active.

Subject: 6.4 - Why is Kahootz 2.0 running slowly?
3D applications like Kahootz can make excessive demands on older and slower computers, and machines meeting the minimum specification may not be able to run Kahootz at the optimum level. However, you should ensure that all other applications are closed to give Kahootz the best running capacity possible.

Check the machine hardware and upgrade the components where possible to optimise Kahootz' performance.

Subject: 6.5 - - Why am I having trouble printing from Kahootz 2.0?
In order to avoid printer-related problems, always check that your printer set up correctly before you try to print from Kahootz 2.0. You should not attempt to add a local or network printer in Windows while Kahootz is running.

Windows 95, 98: There are known conflicts between Kahootz and Hewlett Packard printer drivers running on Windows 95 and 98; printing from Kahootz on these computers may fail or, in extreme cases, Kahootz may crash.
There is currently no solution for this problem.

Subject: 6.6 - Why is Kahootz telling me that it won't be able to save or open files?
In order to save and open Xpression files, Kahootz needs to write data to a temporary space on your computer's hard drive. If your personal settings will not allow you to do this then Kahootz will warn you of the problem.

You may need to contact your system administrator and check your user profile and machine settings to ensure that you are allowed to save and open files.

Subject: 6.7 - Why is Kahootz 2.0 crashing on my IBM Thinkpad?
The current version of Kahootz 2.0 will cause some IBM Thinkpads to crash when opening an Xpression. This problem occurs due to an incompatability between the Thinkpad's ATI video drivers and Kahootz' Intel 3d renderer.

You can solve this problem by disabling hardware acceleration in Kahootz 2.0. There are two ways you can force Kahootz 2.0 to run in software mode:.

Via the Kahootz 2.0 Installer: Insert the installation disk and wait for the Installer to launch. The Installer should tell you that Kahootz 2.0 is already installed. Click on the button marked "Force software mode" then click on the button marked "Test system". When the test is completed, exit the installer.

Manually: Locate the "ktz_cf.txt" file in the Kahootz 2.0 directory on your computer. Open the file in Wordpad and change line 6 to read "Software". Save and close the file.

Kahootz 2.0 should now open safely in software mode.

UPDATE: If you are running Kahootz Version 2.0.3 or better, you can solve the problem by using OpenGL as your preferred renderer and still have access to hardware rendering.
To do this, locate "ktz_cf.txt" as described above, and change line 6 to read "OpenGL".

Subject: 6.8 - Why is Kahootz telling me I have "insufficient memory" on a computer with more than 1000 megabytes of RAM?!
This is a known issue that was resolved in Kahootz Version 2.0.1.

    Go to top of page

    7. MEDIA

Subject: 7.1 - What is in the Kahootz library?
Kahootz includes an extensive library of 3d models, images, textures and sounds. Because every Kahootz user shares these assets it is possible to keep the size of Xpression documents small.

Subject: 7.2 - What kinds of media can I import into Kahootz 2.0?
On a PC, the current version of Kahootz 2.5 will import image files in jpg, tif, bmp, and gif formats.
On the Macintosh, Kahootz can only import jpg files saved on a Macintosh. Kahootz will not currently import sound or video files.

Subject: 7.3 - What kinds of media can I export from Kahootz 2.0?
Kahootz can save documents in its own "Xpression" file format or export images as "jpg" files. The Kahootz Movie Maker plug-in allows you to export video files from Kahootz 2.0(see Subject 11, below).

    Subject: 7.4 - How do I export a Kahootz 2.0 image?
Choose "Export Image" from the "Tools" menu.

    Subject: 7.5 - Can I export video/audio from Kahootz 2.0?
The Kahootz 2.0 Movie Maker plug-in (see Subject 11, below) allows you to export digital video files from Kahootz as either Windows Video (.avi) or Quicktime (.mov).
There is currently no way of exporting audio from Kahootz.

Subject: 7.6 - Can I loop sounds or add more than one sound to an object?
There is currently no way to loop sounds in Kahootz 2.0, nor is it possible to add multiple sound links to a single object.

    Go to top of page

    8. XPRESSIONS

Subject: 8.1 - What happens when I "save and compress" an Xpression?
When you save an Xpression file, Kahootz includes copies of all the images used in the document (including the thumbnails you see in the scenes menu at the top of the screen). When you compress an Xpression, Kahootz deletes all of these images in order to minimize the size of the file. Compressed Xpressions still include copies of any imported images.

Subject: 8.2 - Why does my compressed Xpression take so long to open?
When you open a compressed Xpression, Kahootz needs to rebuild every image in every scene of the Xpression. Rebuilding images from saved data can take some time, particularly if those images include complex lines and curves.

Subject: 8.3 - Why does importing an image increase the size of my Xpression by more than the file size of that image?
When you import an image into an Xpression it is saved without any compression, even if the original image was highly compressed. Compressed images may become much larger when included in Kahootz.

Subject: 8.4 - Why do "My Patterns" increase the size of my Xpression even if I'm not using them in any of my scenes?
Once you have defined a pattern, Kahootz 2.0 will continue to save the pattern even if it is not used anywhere in your Xpression. If you are running Kahootz 2.0.4 or better, you can use the Pattern Manager plug in to delete these unused patterns from your Xpression (see Subject 12 below).

    Go to top of page

    9. 3D RENDERING

    Subject: 9.1 - What is a renderer?
A renderer is a piece of software that takes the data describing a 3d scene and transforms it into an image on the computer screen.

Subject: 9.2 - What is hardware and software mode in Kahootz 2.0?
The Kahootz 2.0 renderer is able to use built-in functions in the computer's video card to increase its speed and the quality of the image it produces.
Kahootz' recommended requirement is for a "second generation" 3D graphics card.

When the renderer is directly controlling the video card it is in "hardware mode".
If, for some reason, the renderer is unable to access the video card's hardware it will continue to render the scene in "software mode", using only the computer's central processor. Rendering in software mode is slower and produces poorer quality images making the 3D Worlds in Kahootz look like large blocks of pixels.

Subject: 9.3 - How can I get Kahootz 2.0 to render in "hardware mode" on my computer?
Kahootz performance can be affected both by the video card installed in your computer and the software "drivers" that are used to operate it.

If you are experiencing performance problems with Kahootz 2.0 - or more serious issues such as system crashes - you should always ensure that you have installed the most recent drivers for your computer's video card.
There are a number of other things you can do to help Kahootz 2.0 work in hardware mode on your computer.

On Windows: ensure that you have installed the most recent version of Microsoft DirectX on your computer.
Kahootz 2.0 requires directX version 5.0 or better to run in hardware mode.

    Check your DirectX version

You can use the Windows dxdiag utility to find this information on your computer.
To launch dxdiag, Go to the Start Menu at the lower leftcorner of your screen and choose "Run", then type "dxdiag".
The DirectX version running on your computer is indicated at the bottom of the first page.
If it is a version lower than 5.0, follow the download steps below.

    Download DirectX
Kahootz requires directX version 5.0 or better to run in hardware mode. The most recent release of directX is version 9.0c: you can find it on Microsoft's directX pages.

On Macintosh: ensure that you have installed the most recent version of OpenGL on your computer.
Kahootz requires OpenGL version 1.2.1 or better to run in hardware mode.

Check your OpenGL version on your Macintosh:
Launch the System Profiler (located in the "Utilities" folder in your "Applications" folder), choose "Software" from the left hand menu, then click on "Frameworks". The most recent release of OpenGL for Macintosh OS 10 is version 1.4.0.
If it is a version lower than 1.2.1, go to the Apple Menu and select Software Update.

    Go to top of page

    10. KAHOOTZ 2.0 NOTEPAD

Subject: 10.1 - Why can't I access Fonts and Stencils in the Notepad?
Some users of Windows 98 and XP have found that Fonts and Stencils are not available in the Notepad after installation and Xpressions using Fonts and Stencils will not display correctly in Kahootz 2.0. We have corrected this problem on the current Kahootz 2.0 disk.

If you encounter this problem, you will be able to fix this by locating and opening the fonts directory in your system folder. You only need to open the fonts directory and windows will update its font information. You can tell if this has worked if the fonts directory shows the names of the kahootz fonts.

Subject: 10.2 - Why are all of my JPEG files greyed out in the "Import Image" dialogue on my Macintosh?
This problem occurs due to the difference between the way Macintosh computers and PCs specify file types. Macintosh computers use a "Resource Fork" to identify files and their associated applications. If you have created JPEG files on a PC or downloaded from the web, they will not include resource forks, and Kahootz 2.0 will not be able to identify them as valid files.

You can fix this problem by saving copies of your files with an image editing program on the Macintosh - the copies you save will include a resource fork. The Kahootz team can also provide you with a drag and drop utility that you can use to assign resouce forks to multiple files (contact support@kahootz.com for further details).
This problem is resolved in Kahootz version 2.0.4 on OS X.

Subject: 11.5 - Why does Kahootz Movie Maker Installer 1.5 for Mac OS refuse to complete installation, telling me that there is already a newer version of Kahootz on my computer?
This is a known issue on OS 10.4, and will be corrected in future releases. In the mean time, you can resolve this problem by removing any existing Kahootz packages from your "Receipts" folder. To do this, go to the "Receipts" folder in the "Library" directory for the current user (ie: at "Current Login: Library: Receipts") and delete any "Kahootz Update" packages you find there. Kahootz Movie Maker Installer 1.5 should now install correctly.
